Hastings Green Party is very pleased to announce Darren Mackenzie as the candidate for Maze Hill Ward.

I love Hastings and St Leonards. I first moved here nearly twenty years ago from Ireland, having just graduated from university. I then trained as a Chartered Accountant in 2007.

Running along the seafront with my children, climbing the steps of the West Hill, exploring and explaining the purpose of the fishing huts to visitors or holding my wife’s hand as we watch the fireworks on Bonfire night; that is Hastings and St. Leonards to me. This town and its people have made it feel like this will be the last home I’ll ever have.

As Councillor for Maze Hill, my job would be to listen and act upon concerns both within the ward and wider town.

I work in Maze Hill as Finance Director for St Michael’s Hospice.

When speaking with local residents, a key concern has been the historic mismanagement of council finances, bringing our town very close to bankruptcy. As a Chartered Accountant with over 15 years’ experience, I can offer an objective and astute audit of our town’s financial health, and develop robust, strategic plans that guarantee the financial wellbeing of the town in an achievable and sustainable way.

Our politics has become increasingly vitriolic and self-serving. A rhetoric of divisiveness is the norm, and facts are ignored for the sake of winning votes and maintaining the status quo for a wealthy few. Rather than sit back and accept this, it is time for me to try and make a difference.

The Green Party are the only party upholding truth, empathy and pragmatism. We are the one party I believe can make a very real change on both a local and national level. That is a change I want to be a part of. That is why I want to be Green Party Councillor for Maze Hill. I believe my passion for our town, combined with my significant professional experience, presents an ideal opportunity to make a real difference for the people of Hastings.
